Looking for where to learn about that “Real Sword” and not those tiny Olympic-style weapons? It’s here!
What’s a longsword?
The longsword is a medieval, two-handed, double-edged weapon popular throughout much of Europe from the 1300s through the 1500s. During this time it served as a weapon of war, a self-defense weapon, and a means of settling disputes in judicial duels. Our study of longsword techniques is based on actual medieval and renaissance fencing manuals, with an eye towards understanding and applying the techniques in a martial setting.
Is longsword right for me?
In comparison to the Olympic weapons (foil, epee, and sabre), our study of a longsword is more of a “complete” martial art: we’ll evaluate techniques based on their effectiveness in actual combat, integrate elements from grappling in our drills, and study other medieval weapons both on their own and as a complement to the longsword.
If you’re looking for a fencing experience that tries to capture “real” sword fighting, this is the weapon for you. No previous experience in fencing or martial arts is necessary! If you are already a fencer or martial artist, the skills you’ve developed will be a great complement to your study of longsword.
Longsword is appropriate for adults and teens ages 12 and up.
One-on-one lessons are also available.
