Coach Samuel Thomas learned to fence here at Indianapolis Fencing Club and has over 9 years of competitive fencing experience with 4 years of coaching experience. He is an “A” rated fencer and has competed in competitions all across the midwest at the local, regional, and national level. Notable results include 15th place out of 92 at the Remenyik ROC in Div 1A epee, and 6th place out of 122 fencers at Collegiate Fencing Conference National Championships in 2023. He served as president, vice president, armorer, and USFA liaison during his tenure at the Fencing Club at Indiana University. He is also a certified United States Fencing Coaches Association coach, earning his epee moniteur in 2024 and his saber moniteur in 2026. He is also a regionally rated referee with over 4 years of referee experience.
Coach Thomas’ approach to coaching is centered around building a love for the sport to complement training. When students enjoy fencing they push themselves to be a stronger, well rounded, and confident fencer. Coach Thomas also emphasizes building self-confidence through fencing, encouraging students to believe they can accomplish anything they set their mind to. His fencing motto is “It ain’t over til it’s over!”
Outside of fencing coach Samuel enjoys lifting weights, video games, energy drinks, and bowling. He is currently enrolled in graduate school at Ball State with aspirations of becoming a public school teacher. He can also ride a unicycle, has played flute for 10+ years, and can solve a Rubik’s cube in under 20 seconds!
Coach Samuel is currently accepting private lesson students for both epee and saber.
