Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • When does the next class start?
    • Upcoming class start dates, times, and locations can be found on our Home page in the REGISTER FOR BEGINNERS’ CLASSES panel.
  • Do I need to be a member of the Indianapolis Fencing Club to take your classes.
    • No, membership is not required.  Our classes give students the opportunity to try out fencing without making an investment in equipment.  We provide all of the required fencing equipment for students.
  • What should I wear to class?
    • Fencing is a physically demanding sport, so wear something appropriate for an athletic activity.  Tennis shoes and shorts/sweat pants work well.  For Épée classes, sweats or long pants are recommended.
  • I would like to take your class but I will miss a couple of classes.  Is this a problem and can I make them up?
    • This is not an issue.  Just make arrangements with the coaches to arrive 15-20 minutes early after the session(s) that you miss and they will make sure to catch you up on the skills that you missed.
  • What Sport Fencing Equipment do I need when I finish my classes and join the club?
    • Members are expected to provide their own fencing equipment which can be purchased on-line from many vendors (blue-gauntlet.com and absolutefencing.com, etc.).  Speak with your Coach before ordering equipment. The cost of equipment will vary depending on the vendor, your weapon of choice, and if you want to compete in fencing tournaments, but will typically run between $200 and $300. Buying both a “beginner set” and a “beginner electric set” is often the most cost effective way to start.  A list of the equipment required for sport fencing is shown below:
      • Mask (with an electric bib for foil)
      • Mask cord (foil only)
      • Jacket
      • Knickers
      • Knee socks
      • Underarm protector
      • Glove
      • Chest Protector (women)
      • Cup (men)
      • Lame (foil only)
      • Electric foil and/or épée (2 needed for tournaments)
      • Foil and/or épée body cord (2 needed for tournaments)
      • Mask cord (foil only)
      • Equipment bag (not required but nice to have)

Please contact your Coach or the IFC (indyfencing@gmail.com) if you have any questions.
